Today started out fairly normal…I got up and had my cookies, then started to procrastinate my run.
During my procrastination phase, I was texting with a friend. She was telling me about another friend of ours…D. D is a 40 something hard charging, high level corporate executive who tackles full iron man length triathlons for fun! Well it turns out D is 5 months pregnant with her first child!! I started out my run thinking about how happy I am for D. She preoccupied my thoughts for the first few miles.
At mile three, it was time to implement my new strategy for regaining some speed. This is a highly complex, advanced strategy, so of you’re a newbie, you may not want to try it until you have some more experience. But here it is….I’ve decided that you have to go fast if you want to go fast! So I ran speedy for my next mile and a half. Two and a half more laps around the park at a slower speed, a few stops at the water fountain, and then I turned out of the park to go home with the intention of doing my last mile (9) speedy too.
I passed the fire station, and was trying to pump myself up to do a fast mile, and wondering what I could write a blog post about when a car that was going in my same direction about 20 feet in front of me jumped the curb, crossed the side walk, ran into some crepe myrtle tree stalks, and then FLIPPED completely over!! It was completely upside down, the roof was totally crushed in, and the car impacted with an electric pole. The transformer on the top of the pole exploded twice, sparks flying everywhere!! I kept running. But faster now, toward the car. A man driving in another car who had witnessed everything yelled at me not to touch the car….it could be live. I didn’t. I saw a lifeless arm in the car and prayed that no one was dead. I yelled inside that we were calling for help, but that we didn’t want to touch the car. I saw movement in the car. At least one person was alive. I ran back to the man in the car who had yelled at me not to touch it..his wife was calling 911. Then I remembered the fire station. It was about 1/10 of a mile away. A boy in a jeep took off. For some stupid reason, so did I. Anyway, the fire engines got to the accident scene within about three minutes of the accident. By the time I got back, they already had a chain saw out to cut through the car to get to the man. It turns out there was only one person in the car…so he was alive.
I hung around for a few minutes, then feeling pretty shook up, decided to head home. I had to run through the scene to get home. Needless to say I didn’t feel up to a speedy last mile either.
When I got home, and was telling my family about the accident, we realized I would have been killed if I’d been running a bit faster in my third and fourth park laps…or if I hadn’t stopped for water.
I pray that the man will be OK. Incidents like this make you put life’s petty issues into perspective.
Today I am trying a link up for the Weekly Wrap hosted by Holly @ HoHoRuns and Tricia @ MissSippiPiddlin. See rules here. Thank you ladies!
my gosh! hope he’s okay. Glad you are…. Like you say: gives you some perspective…

Yeah, I was thinking about all this petty stuff….then boom! I’m going to stop by the fire station for an update

yes- do. It’ll play on your mind otherwise. And yes… it’s the suddenness of these types of incidents that is always so shocking… 😦

You’re so right about the suddenness! I keep going over it in my mind like I’m watching a TV show!

yes. That will probably last a while… Hope you find closure sooner rather than later… (and all is okay)

Oh holy cow! What a terrible thing to witness!! At least you know the man was alive, and hopefully there will be some way to do a follow up so you know he’s okay! And thank goodness for water breaks, but you must not think about what might have happened. That would be enough to freak anyone out. By the way… thanks for the tip on how to run fast, lol. I still consider myself one but I’m going to have to try your strategy regardless! 😀 (I procrastinate something terrible before my runs as well, hehe)

I think I’ll stop by the fire station to see if they have any news on the man.

Wow. How lucky! I’m happy you’re okay, and I’m happy the guy survived. I wonder what he was doing for that to happen.
And it’s scary how often in life there are moments where it feels like we cheated death.

Thanks! I have to wonder if maybe he was having a heart attack or maybe a diabetic seizure??

Hmm. I’m glad you think nicely of him… I’m a horrible person and jumped to texting, or surfing on a smart phone.

Or else I’m just stupid. The texting thing never occurred to me. But you could be right

No, I don’t think it’s stupid. It shows good will. I just hope he’s okay, either way. Honestly, if it was texting, he’ll learn from his mistakes. If it is a medical issue, that’s more long term and nothing I’d wish for anyone.

How scary! I am glad you are ok and hopefully the driver is ok as well. It’s amazing how quickly car accidents can happen, one blink and a car is in a tree. I wish people would just pay more attention.

I hope he is OK too! And you’re right it just happened so fast! I have to admit, I felt a bit timid on my run this morning

Oh my goodness! That is so crazy. Glad you are okay. That’s probably what you least expect when running

I totally don’t expect that level of scariness! I always run on the sidewalk, and somehow always think that this makes me immune to road risk. Guess not. I have to admit, I was a bit uneasy this morning running in the dark. (Yesterday’s incident was in FULL daylight)

How crazy is that? I hope he is okay, and glad you are! He is lucky you were there to witness and offer help! A great reminder to always be aware of and careful of cars on the road.

There were lots of folks to help. So that was a good thing. I was running with my tunes in my ears. I think that might be the end of that practice. Not like being able to hear outside noises would have helped in this situation, but overall it’s more safe without tunes

OMG that was crazy timing! I am glad he was alive and hopefully he recovers fully. You were so close I am sure you are still shook up. Thank goodness you got thirsty. Great fast thinking by the man that also thought to tell you not to touch the car. And here, I thought this story was about how fast your ran your training run!!!

I am so lucky in so many ways!! The man who said not to touch the car…
Now the question becomes do I run faster on my runs or slower??

Rebecca, that is so scary! That is one of those freak things that you can’t do anything about. I wonder if the man had a heart attack or something like that? I’m glad you are safe. Wow, talk about a huge dose of perspective. I appreciate you linking us with us again. Have a quiet and safe week!

Yes…that’s what I think must have happened. A heart attack or some kind of seizure. Thanks for the link up!

OMG girl I was on the edge of my seat reading this! I so hope the man is ok and I’m so very glad you are too! That was some scary story that could have turned out really bad! You are very smart to offer your help I’m glad someone told you not to touch the car I’m not sure I would have thought about not doing it. I hope instinct will just take over I’m guess that’s what happend for you. What made the car hit the curb? Do you know?

I’m not sure what made him jump the curb…heart attack? Diabetic seizure? Or maybe texting? The road curves right where he jumped the curb

Holy crap. This is scary. I’m glad you are okay, and you stopped for water. The butterfly effect is a scary thing, right? God. On a lighter note, thanks for the newbie tip. I hadn’t heard that one yet lol

Don’t know about the butterfly effect? I am guessing it has something to do with timing and yes God for sure!!

I stopped by the fire station yesterday to see how the crash guy was doing. They didn’t know. So I hope he’s OK too. Thanks for stopping by!

That is awful! Awful for him and for you! I’m always scared of this sort of thing when I run the sidewalks next to roads here. We’ve had a couple people veer across the run path and hit the trees too. I have to admit it’s a big reason I opt for the treadmill so much, especially during high traffic times. I can’t believe that happened to you. I would probably never run again outside after that!

Well I will tell you, I’ve been a treadmill girl this week!! Hopefully I can get the courage to go outside this weekend! I think I’ll tone down the tunes when I run too. Like maybe one ear free, and one ear with tunes just so I can be better aware of my surroundings!
